'We are convinced we can get promoted'

10 December 2012

Carl Baker believes the bad start to the season is now behind Coventry...

Coventry City captain Carl Baker is adamant the Sky Blues can achieve promotion from League One after their 5-1 win over Walsall.

The City midfielder produced a brilliant performance against the Saddlers, scoring a brace, which puts him on eight goals for the season and seven assists after setting up David McGoldrick’s second goal.

Before the start of the League One season, Coventry was expected to mount a League One promotion challenge after relegation from the Championship last season.

Baker believes the side have now left their poor start to the season behind them and that promotion can be achieved this season.

The City captain said: “We are 100% convinced we can get promoted. I have always felt like we could get promoted even when we started off very poorly.

“I see the players in training so I know the quality of the players at this club. We have got great strength in depth as well because we have players who are currently not in the team, but are ready to come in and do a job.

“Thankfully, the gaffer has come in and got us playing the way we can play. The confidence levels are sky high at the moment and I think it was just a few little tweaks which needed to happen.

“Those tweaks have made us a better, stronger team and we are now going into every game expecting to win.

“We are disappointed if we are coming into the dressing room at the end of the game and we haven’t got the three points, which is a big change from the early stages of the season.

“Obviously, we are a little bit away but you never stop believing and the league is so tight that if you get a consistent run of results, you can be right up there.

“I am almost glad we have had our bad run early on in the season and teams like Tranmere and Doncaster have been flying since the start of the season.

“Hopefully, they will have a bit of a bad run at some point and that will give us time to catch up.”

The side which started against Walsall has been left unchanged by manager Mark Robins for the last four league games, a run of games which has seen Coventry pick up 10 points.

Baker is suspended for next week’s trip to the Keepmoat Stadium to face Doncaster after his fifth yellow card of the season, but he believes the consistency throughout the side is reaping rewards.

He added: “You get used to playing with certain players and obviously for myself, playing with Cyrus Christie has been great because he has been on fire recently.

“The more you play together, the better you get. I am devastated that I am suspended for next week but I am sure whoever comes in will do a great job for the team.

“If we can carry on the style of football we are playing at the moment, I am sure we can get the three points next week as well.”
