Sky Blues Under 18s kick off new season with defeat to Sheffield United

Coventry City Academy opened their season with a 4-2 defeat to Sheffield United.

Ben Maund had given the Under-18's the lead within the first two minutes of the game when the Sheffield defence couldn't clear a cross and it fell for Maund who slammed home from 20 yards.

However, in a lively opening to the game, United struck back within two minutes with Max Pemberton pulling the home side level.

The Blades were in control at this point and took the lead before half-time through Jahmel Smith, and stretched it further after the break with Diego De Girolamo grabbing the hosts' third.

United's Ben Whiteman added a fourth before Courtney Baker-Richardson got a consolation for the Sky Blues.

Academy Manager Gregor Rioch said: "On the ball, we did really well but we were poor defensively today.

"Plenty for us to work on as we didn't deal with them when they had the ball out wide."
