Sky Blues boss Thorn wants improvement

1 August 2012

City boss Thorn says there is a lot of work ahead for squad after the 4-1 loss at Wrexham

Sky Blues boss Andy Thorn wants his side to ‘put things right’ before the season starts after Coventry’s 4-1 loss at Wrexham.

The Welsh side scored two goals either side of the half with Rob Ogleby, Neil Ashton, Dean Keates and John Hunt all finding the net for the Blue Square Premier side.

Brazilian trialist Bruno Cazarine did net a consolation for the Sky Blues late on but the City boss wants his side to improve before the 2012/13 League One season starts.

Thorn said: “With that sort of performance, you learn a few things and it’s a good job it happened now and not in two week’s time.

“We’ve learnt a hell of a lot tonight about the side and that will help us prepare but we must improve before the real action begins.

“We have two weeks of hard graft ahead of us now and we must put in the work to put things right. It is virtually a new back four but we can’t defend like that.

“A lot of work will be getting the new signings gelled into the team and work on our shape. A lot to think about and we will be looking to put things right.”

Coventry’s next pre-season game is an away trip to Accrington Stanley at the weekend followed by another trip to Port Vale three days later.

Whilst conceding the performance wasn’t good enough, Thorn says results like this realises the importance of having a difficult pre-season schedule.

He added: “You don’t really learn much when you win 8-0 and 5-0 like we did in our first two pre-season games.

“We came here tonight expecting a real test from a very good Wrexham side and in the end, we didn’t stand up to the task.

“Shows how much work we have to put in before the league starts and we will be working on a lot of things from that performance.

“Our shape wasn’t quite right tonight and it’s all right keeping the ball and passing it around but we didn’t really use it.

“Much to think about going forward and they will be putting in a lot of hard work I can assure you.”
