City boss looking forward to Midlands derby cup clash with Birmingham

The Sky Blues booked their place in round two with a 1-0 away win over Dagenham & Redbridge last night, thanks to a late penalty from midfielder Kevin Kilbane.

City have now been handed a home tie against their West Midlands rivals in the next round of the competition and Thorn believes it is a great draw.

He said: “I think it’s a fantastic draw and I am sure our supporters will be really looking forward to it because it’s a local derby.

“We’ve got some very important league games before then and it’s important that we make a good start in the league but this is a really good draw for us and I am sure it will be an exciting derby.”

It’s the club’s first home league cup tie for more than three years after the Sky Blues took on Hartlepool at the Ricoh Arena in early 2009.

Birmingham confirmed their place in the Second Round of the Capital One Cup by beating Barnet 5-1 at St Andrew’s to set-up the tie with Coventry.

Capital One Cup second round ties are due to take place the week commencing Monday, August 27.
