REPORT: Burnley 1-0 Sky Blues

City fall to narrow defeat...

14 January 2023

The Sky Blues fell to a narrow defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon in the Sky Bet Championship.

Despite City enjoying the better chances throughout the game, Burnley snatched a late winner ten minutes from time to come away with all three points.

It was the Sky Blues who had the better start to the match, as Viktor Gyökeres was causing the Burnley full-backs trouble on either flank.

Firstly, Viktor got the better of former City man, Ian Maatsen, taking it past the defender and pulling the ball back for Jamie Allen, but he couldn’t get the connection he would’ve liked.

And it was the captain who had City’s next chance, after the Swede beat Connor Roberts and found Allen on the edge of the area, but his shot went narrowly wide.

The hosts first attempt was a wayward strike from Manuel Benson, who cut inside and blazed the ball high and wide.

At the other end, space opened up for Gustavo Hamer to try his luck from distance and although it looked threatening, his effort flew over the bar.

City were controlling the game and creating chances, coming close to finding the game's opening goal just after the half-hour mark, but Allen couldn’t direct Jake Bidwell’s cross on target.

Moments later, Kasey Palmer latched onto a Ben Sheaf through ball, after some great work from Viktor Gyökeres in the build-up, and City’s number 45 worked his way into the box, but his shot was blocked by Maatsen.

HALF-TIME: Burnley 0-0 Sky Blues

After the restart, a loose pass from Jordan Beyer let Viktor Gyökeres run at Muric in the Burnley goal, and as he took it round the ‘keeper, he was intercepted by a fine challenge to deny him getting a shot away.

Burnley had their best opportunity of the game minutes later, as a ball across the box fell to Manuel Benson at the back post, but he fired his shot over the bar.

Gyökeres was causing Burnley problems all afternoon and after winning a free-kick 30 yards out, Gustavo Hamer stepped up and put his shot inches wide of goal.

Ben Wilson was called into action for the first time of the afternoon, as he had to be alert to keep substitute Nathan Tella’s header out from close range.

The hosts would make their next chance count and it was defender Jordan Beyer who headed home from a corner to put the Clarets in front ten minutes from time.

Despite their best efforts, City were unable to find a leveller, and were forced to settle for defeat at Turf Moor.
