REPORT: Sky Blues 3-0 Peterborough United

City up to second in the league...

24 September 2021

The Sky Blues winning return to Coventry continued with three second half goals ensuring a fifth successive home win in the league with over 20,000 in attendance tonight!

Coventry had dominated the first half but City's patience was rewarded when Gustavo Hamer set them on the way in the 57th minute before a quick fire Viktor Gyökeres double ensured another three points on the board for Mark Robins' men!

City started brightly with crosses from Todd Kane, then Ian Maatsen causing the Peterborough backline trouble as Maatsen played in Martyn Waghorn only to be beaten to the ball by Posh ‘keeper David Cornell.

Gyökeres then broke into the box and found Callum O’Hare, whose low shot was saved before the midfielder’s follow up was blocked and unluckily rebounded off the midfielder for a goal kick.

The visitors first attempt on goal went wide as Posh skipper Nathan Thompson shot from range with the Sky Blues going up the other end minutes later through Maatsen with his cross finding Todd Kane at the edge of the box but his fierce shot was blocked.

Hamer intercepted Siriki Dembele’s pass and unleashed a well hit shot then flew just over Cornell’s goal before Kane fired a low cross into the box that O’Hare narrowly missed out making contact on.

Cornell was called into action on City’s next attack when Waghorn crossed the ball to the back post to Maatsen who brought the ball down and shot but the Posh shot stopper was equal to it.

The Maatsen-Kane duo combined again in the 40th minute when the former’s cross field pass found the latter before he cut into the box and put his effort wide of the goal.

The Sky Blues broke through O’Hare but as he was about to enter the box he was brought down by Peterborough’s Dan Butler and City were awarded a free kick, with Hamer’s strike curling just over the bar.

The home side ended the half on top and in the first minute of stoppage time the ball fell to Waghorn but, on the turn, the forward put his shot wide.

HALF TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Peterborough United

The visitors had the first opportunity of the half when Dembele found himself in space on the edge of the box but the forward slipped as he took the shot and Jake Clarke-Salter headed away.

City responded by O’Hare who played in Gyökeres but his across goal effort rolled just wide of the far post.

Clarke-Salter won a free kick on the edge of the box and from the delivery Hamer picked out Hyam at the back stick who headed back across goal to Gyökeres, but his goal bound effort was somehow blocked on the line.

The Sky Blues were in the ascendancy and went close again as O’Hare found Jamie Allen in space, but his effort was blocked however City wouldn’t have to wait much longer for the opener…

Posh won a corner and from it, Hamer put the Sky Blues on the counter attack and found Allen whose quick pass to Gyökeres alerted Maatsen who ran down the wing. His cross deflected out to Waghorn, and although his effort was cleared off the line the ball fell straight to Hamer, who ended the move he started, by firing the ball home to put City ahead!

And the vocal home support wouldn’t have long to wait for a second as Hamer’s header put in Kane out wide whose whipped in cross found Gyökeres in front of goal to convert the cross to double the lead!

With only seven minutes passing from the deadlock being broken, the Sky Blue Army would be in dreamland, as Gyökeres grabbed his second of the match to put City 3-0 up!

His strike partner Waghorn collected the ball in the middle of the pitch and played in the in form Swede who had the Posh defense on strings as he sent them one way then the other before placing his shot out of Cornell’s reach!

The visitors did go in search of a consolation, but Thompson’s effort proved an easy save down to his left for Simon Moore.

And Moore was at it again, getting down low, to deny Harrison Burrows one on one to earn City’s Number One a third successive home clean sheet, a perfect way to round off the win!
