REPORT: Sky Blues 2-0 Brentford

City secured a fine win against the Bees...

20 February 2021

A brace from Tyler Walker secured an impressive 2-0 win for the Sky Blues against promotion chasing Brentford on Saturday lunchtime at St Andrew's.

Walker opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Max Biamou was fouled before doubling his tally in the second-half with a smart turn and finish.

The victory ends City’s five-game winless run and moves them six points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a tough trip to Swansea City in midweek.

Mark Robins made four changes to the side beaten by Norwich City in midweek with captain Liam Kelly starting for the first time since December, Leo Ostigard and Sam McCallum returning in defence and Biamou starting in attack.

That meant that Michael Rose, Jordan Shipley, Matty James and Jamie Allen all dropped to the bench as Robins freshened up his squad following a tough match against the league leaders on Wednesday night.

City were also wearing the Championship Club Membership shirt, a one-off shirt exclusively available to members, which includes the names of all members on the back.

Brentford had an early chance from a corner when the ball was flicked on at the near post and headed off the line by Kyle McFadzean.

City then created a chance of their own when Biamou headed the ball into the path of Callum O’Hare who saw his effort from 20-yards out well saved by Bees goalkeeper David Raya.

The Sky Blues continued to threaten when Biamou’s volley was pushed away by Raya before the striker was fouled by Rico Henry when attempting to retrieve the loose ball.

Walker dispatched the resulting penalty on 19 minutes, firing low into the bottom corner underneath the body of Raya to put the Sky Blues ahead.

The visitors tried to hit back immediately when a free-kick was dinked into the box and headed goalwards by Mathias Jensen with Ben Wilson making a smart save from close range.

City almost doubled their lead when McFadzean’s powerful header fell into the path of O’Hare who fired a first time volley towards goal that was somehow kept out by Raya at his near post.

The chances continued to flow at St Andrew’s when Walker was slid through down the right-hand side of the penalty area but fired his effort over the crossbar.

HALF-TIME: SKY BLUES 1-0 BRENTFORD

City started the second period on the front foot with Hamer and O’Hare exchanging passes which ended with the former shooting into the side netting from a tight angle.

The Sky Blues doubled their lead when Biamou won back possession just outside the Brentford penalty area before O’Hare found Walker in the box who spun his man and finished into the bottom left corner.

City could have added to their lead when Hamer’s corner from the left was flicked on at the near post into the path of Dom Hyam, but the defender couldn’t direct his effort on target under pressure from a Brentford defender.

The visitors still posed a threat in attack when Jensen fired in a bouncing effort that was pushed away by Wilson low down to his left as City closed out the win with relative comfort to secure a vital three points.
