REPORT: Sky Blues 2-1 Fleetwood Town

Second half goals send City back into the play-off places...

23 October 2019

The Sky Blues secured a come from behind victory against Fleetwood Town on Wednesday night to move back into the Sky Bet League One play-off places.

Second half goals from Amadou Bakayoko and Zain Westbrooke, the latter scoring from the penalty spot, cancelled out Paddy Madden’s early strike.

The win moves City into fourth place in the League One table and ends a run of four league games without a victory.

The visitors had the first opportunity of the game on seven minutes when Danny Andrew’s free-kick from 25-yards out was well-saved by Marko Marosi low down to his right-hand side.

Just two minutes later, Fleetwood took the lead when Madden turned the ball home from two yards out after Ched Evans initial effort struck the post.

City almost found a bizarre leveller when Callum O’Hare’s cross to the back post dipped onto the roof of Alex Cairns net, minutes after falling behind.

Fleetwood had another free-kick opportunity on 27 minutes, with Marosi making a smart save low down to his left to deny Evans before Fankaty Dabo cleared Jack Sowerby’s follow-up attempt off the line.

Marosi made a magnificent acrobatic save just past the half hour mark, denying Kyle Dempsey’s powerful header from eight yards out.

The keeper was called into action again shortly after easily catching Madden’s attempted chip.

HALF-TIME: SKY BLUES 0-1 FLEETWOOD TOWN

Mark Robins made a double change at half-time introducing Kyle McFadzean and Max Biamou from the bench in an attempt to change the flow of the game.

The Sky Blues drew level on 59 minutes when Bakayoko hammered an effort into the roof of the net after Sam McCallum had seen his ferocious goal bound attempt blocked on the line by Jimmy Dunne.

City completed the turnaround when Westbrooke fired home from the penalty spot on 68 minutes after Biamou was brought down in the penalty area by Dunne.

The pressure continued from City with 15 minutes left to play, when O’Hare saw his effort saved by Cairns as they searched for a third goal to kill off the game.

Westbrooke almost scored his second of the night when he let rip from 30-yards out, inside the final 10 minutes, with his effort arrowing inches past the right-hand post.

Evans spurned a late chance for the visitors, blazing an effort well over the crossbar, as City comfortably held on to claim the three points.
