PREVIEW: Coventry City v Crewe Alexandra - The Sky Blues host the Railwaymen at the Ricoh

City face the Alex in SkyBet League Two...

29 September 2017

Venue: Ricoh Arena

Competition: SkyBet League Two

Date: Saturday 30th September, 2017

Kick-off: 7.45pm

The Sky Blues welcome the Railwaymen to the Ricoh Arena knowing that a win could see them jump to second in SkyBet League Two.

The Railwaymen, sitting eighteeth in the standings, have lost their last five league games getting beat 5-0 by Carlisle along the way.

The man in charge at Gresty Road is former Gibraltar international David Artell. The centre-back, who even has a degree in Forensic Science from the University of Chester, made 72 appearances for Crewe as a player and took the vacant managers job in January, winning eleven of his first 33 games in charge.

The Opponents

Top scorer for the Railwaymen is former Derby and Sheffield United forward Chris Porter. The 33-year old has scored five in eight since his move from Colchester in the summer.

A recognisable name on the back of tomorrow's programme is Chris Dagnall. The former Coventry loanee scored just once during his time at the Ricoh, a second-half equaliser at Stadium M:K in a game that City would fight back to win 3-1 in front of 5,000 travelling supporters.

Also upfront for the Alex is former Aston Villa youngster Jordan Bowery. Bowery made 19 Premier League appearances for the Villains as a 21-year old after a successful start to his career with Chesterfield.

Memorable Meeting

Adam Armstrong's hat-trick helped the Sky Blues to a 5-0 victory over the Railwaymen at Gresty Road in 2015.

City were four goals to the good by half time and Armstrong had already completed his hat-trick when the sides went in at the break.

Jacob Murphy's 25-yard curler was the pick of the goals and the man on-loan from Norwich also grabbed the games winner in the second half after he twisted and turned into space before firing his effort low into the far bottom corner.

REPORT: Coventry City 1-0 Crewe Alexandra - Nazon strike derails the Alex

Nazon on target at the Ricoh..

30 September 2017

The Sky Blues have made it three wins in seven days thanks to a first strike from Duckens Nazon.

The Haiti international's close range effort proved to t he be the difference between the two sides at the Ricoh as City close the gap on the automatic promtion places in SkyBet League Two.

Jodi Jones got the game's only assist after reacting quickest to a ball kept in play by the corner flag as Mark Robins' side make it nine points in seven days.

The game's opener came with a huge stroke of fortune. ones gambled on a ball that looked certain to be heading behind for a goal-kick until it was kept in play by the corner flag. Jones was then in and behind to charge across the byline and into the area where he picked out Nazon to fire home from close range. The Sky Blues had the luckiest of leads.

The goal had shaken the visitors and the following fifteen minutes was simply a Coventry onslaught. Jones came closest to doubling the lead two minutes later but his 25-yard curler came back off the crossbar.

After the inverval, the Railwaymen began to grow into the game. Former Sky Blue loanee Chris Dagnall came close to picking out Chris Porter with a low cross on the hour mark but Lee Burge was quick to pounce on that.

Brad Walker had looked like one of Crewe's better players over the afternoon and he too came close to pulling the visitors level. His free-kick from wide clipped the top of the cross bar as it arrowed over the bar.

Stuart Beavon has missed the last two games with a back injury and almost made an instant impact after coming on in the 72nd minute. The former Burton man turned his marker well to play Nazon in on goal but Alex 'keeper Dave Richards did well to deny Duckens his second.

The change gave City some life in the closing periods. Rod McDonald's effort from long range forced a strong double-save again from Richards with Nazon's rebound also being palmed away. The last action of the afternoon.
