With unemployment being a major issue to local authorities, we feel it is our job to upskill, educate and encourage our community to take their first steps onto the career ladder. We provide qualifications, volunteer opportunities and paid employment to both young people and adults to maximise their chance of future success.

We are confident that with our connections, experience and high quality educational projects, we have a route for everyone across Coventry and Warwickshire.

The National Citizen Service (NCS)

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a programme open to 16 – 17 year old’s across the country to take on new challenges, make new friends, gain new skills and develop social skills through outdoor activities and workshops such as first aid, inspirational speaking and public speaking. The programme sees young people also give back their time, with 30 hours of social action supporting their local community though raising money to giving up time to a local cause.

At Sky Blues in the Community, we work in partnership with four schools (Grace Academy, Coundon Court, Caludon Castle, and Coundon Court) within Coventry to offer a summer programme of NCS to students aged 16 and 17 who attend one of these schools. In the last year, we saw 60 young people attend during the month of August over two programmes and 52 young people graduating the NCS programme.

During the summer programme, young people attended Go Ape and Coventry Indoor Climbing Centre while having workshops from Edufit Training and Loud Speaker UK with them delivering two fantastic social action projects supporting the homeless with care packages with funds raised by fundraising activities and also care packages for the RSPCA, where they delivered toys and treats to the animals at the local Coventry centre.

This Autumn, we delivered in partnership with Coventry College two NCS programmes with the Level 2 Sport and Public Services students. Over the month of November, students got to visit Go Ape, Leicestershire Outdoor Sports and Warwick Boat Club to participate in a range of outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, high ropes and axe throwing to name a few.

The students also had workshops delivered by Edufit Training and Loud Speaker UK on emergency first aid, team building skills and public speaking skills. For the groups social action projects, both programmes delivered from start to finish fundraising activities at Coventry College, City Campus and Alan Higgs Centre, raising over £200 for a vaccine charity, cancer research and RSPCA.

The NCS programme will continue next year to deliver in the summer and autumn in 2022.
