Dutch winger Ellery Cairo joined City from Hertha Berlin on a free transfer in June 2007, signing a one-year deal at the Ricoh Arena.

The 29-year-old star began his career with hometown club Feyenoord, but after making a solitary first-team appearance as a 16-year-old he shipped to second-tier outfit Excelsior Rotterdam to gain experience in 1997.

He returned to Feyenoord mid-way through the 1998-99 campaign and immediately set about holding down a regular place in the side, scoring seven goals in just 28 appearances for the Dutch giants.

But a shake-up at the De Kuip Stadion saw Cairo leave for pastures new in 2000 as he linked-up with Eredivisie rivals FC Twente and started what would turn out an impressive spell.

A move to German Bundesliga outfit SC Freiburg followed during the summer of 2003 and he quickly adjusted to life in a foreign environment, racking up more than 50 appearances and four goals in two seasons.

His impressive form for Freiburg, which saw him called-up by Holland coach Marco Van Basten for an international friendly camp, prompted a move to German giants Hertha Berlin for the start of the 2005/06 season, where he grabbed two goals in 29 outings.
