NEWS: City's Noon in Cup draw

Posted on: Fri 27 Jan 2012

COVENTRY City Academy's Head of Sports Science Mark Noon will be doing the live fifth round draw for the FA Cup on Sunday.

Noon, who has played for Nuneaton since 2004, has been invited to take part in the draw as it will centre on Nuneaton Town's remarkable 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough in 2006.

The third round fixture saw the Premier League side, with the likes of Lee Cattermole, Yakubu and Gareth Southgate travel to the Midlands to play the Conference North side.

Gazika Mendieta will be doing the draw alongside Noon and he put the visitors in front at the Triton Showers Community Stadium before Town were awarded a penalty in the final minute after Noon was fouled in the area.

Striker Gez Murphy stepped up to seal a remarkable draw and Noon says he is very proud to have the honour of doing the FA Cup draw.

Town club captain Noon commented: "It all came as a bit of a surprise really. I thought one of the lads might have been winding me up but it is great I have been chosen.

"They said they wanted to remember some famous ties and some Cup upsets when doing the draw.

"I am just really happy to do it as it is a great honour but also great to remember what we did that day as it was a great result for us against a Premier League side.

"And to draw it next to someone who was once brought for £30 million in the shape of Gazika Mendieta, it is quite surreal.

"They played all their stars that day with Yakubu, Adam Johnson and Gareth Southgate so it is nice that the FA acknowledge our efforts.

"I don't really have much of a preference in any fixtures I want to draw out but hopefully I can make something special. I will try and keep the big teams apart as I always like to see the big teams in the final."
