ON THAT DAY: On to the fifth round!

Posted on: Mon 30 Jan 2012

THIS season Coventry City Football Club remembers the 25th anniversary of the famous FA Cup win of 1987.

Here at www.ccfc.co.uk we thought the best way to honour that remarkable acheivement would be to recreate the famous cup run that saw the Sky Blues go all the way to Wembley.

On January 31st 1987 John Sillett's Sky Blues faced a fourth round trip to Old Trafford to face the might of Manchester United.

On a freezing day which saw a half-thawed and half-frozen pitch caused by faulty undersoil heating at Old Trafford, City overcame the bookies' odds to dump the Reds out of the cup and set up a fifth round tie away at Stoke City.

Keith Houchen, who was destined to immortalise himself in the FA Cup final with his famous diving header at Wembley, kicked off his FA Cup goal account in less spectacular fashion, bundling the only goal of the game into the net after 20 minutes.

It was just as effective though as a United side including former City striker Terry Gibson, who had made the move to Manchester from Coventry just 12 months earlier, failed to break down City's defence.
