BLOCKLEY: Leicester born, Coventry bred

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010

COVENTRY City Jeff Blockley said he still looked fondly on his time with both the Sky Blues and Leicester City in a football career that eventually came full circle.

The Leicester-born central defender turned out for both the Sky Blues and the Foxes in a 12-year football career that saw him retire at the age of 31 having also played for Arsenal and Notts County, picking up one full England cap in the process.

Blockley said though he looked most fondly at his earlier years as a player, a period of time which saw him as a lynchpin in the Coventry City side that qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1970/71.

But with the Sky Blues' M69 derby with Leicester City just around the corner on Saturday, Blockley reminisced on his school days in Leicester where he caught the eye of professional scouts before progressing to the Sky Blues youth and first time at the start of a journey which saw him loop back to his hometown during the twilight years of his career.

"It was strange because my career went full circle really, starting at school in Leicester, signing for Coventry City and then Arsenal before finding myself back at Leicester," Blockley said.

"I went to school in Leicester where we had a successful school side. Peter Shilton was in goal for us at the time and although I had signed schoolboy forms with Arsenal it was their decision to let me go once I had finished school which allowed me to sign for Coventry City.

"It was strange really that I then moved from Coventry to Arsenal as a pro and then back to Leicester where it all started for me."
