FREE: Cameron thanks Wood and McPake

Posted on: Fri 27 Aug 2010

COVENTRY City centre-back Nathan Cameron has paid tribute to his defensive colleagues Richard Wood and James McPake.

The 18-year-old has started every league game this season, receiving great credit for his performances at the heart of the Sky Blues defence.

And despite being in direct competition for places, Wood and McPake have been more than happy to steer the youngster in the right direction.

"They are great professionals and have been giving me as much help and advice as possible," said Cameron.

"They have given me a lot of advice on defending, how to communicate on the pitch and how to do certain things.

"Even when they are not in the team they always try to help the players around them."

The experience gained from a loan spell at Nuneaton last season also helped. But even after great success at Liberty Way, Cameron was surprised to be selected ahead of Wood and McPake for the first four games.

"I was still in my second year as a scholar when I went to Nuneaton and it was a great 12 games I played," he said.

"I really enjoyed my time there. The fans were great and getting promoted as well as winning a cup was an added bonus.

"If you had told me six weeks ago that I would be starting the first four games of the season I don't know what I would have said to you."

But Cameron is clearly not one to rest on his laurels and has set high targets for himself, and the Sky Blues.

He said: "It has been a great start. The manager has instilled a lot of confidence in me and there is a great atmosphere in the dressing room.

"I want to keep on playing my game so the manager keeps picking me. I hope to keep on playing well and maybe earn a call-up to the England under-21s. I haven't heard anything yet but I know Stuart Pearce was at the game on Saturday.

"As a team I think we are a lot stronger and experienced this year and with the likes of Lee Carsley and Gary McSheffrey, we can go as far as we want to."
