FREE: Turner hopes goal is first of many

Posted on: Mon 23 Aug 2010

BIRTHDAY boy Ben Turner is hoping his late winner against Derby County will be the first of many.

The centre-half celebrated his 22nd birthday on Saturday and capped his man-of-the-match performance with his first professional goal to give the Sky Blues their second win of the season.

He said: "I stayed up after a corner but it was a superb ball in from Lee Carsley because it dipped right at the last minute and I got my head to it. I only knew it was in when the net bulged.

"I certainly hadn't practiced a celebration at all and what you saw was just adrenalin kicking in. I was just so delighted.

"But there is no hiding from it, I should score more goals. Hopefully more will follow."

It was Turner's second vital header of a busy afternoon. He had earlier come to the aid of 'keeper Keiren Westwood as he headed Paul Green's lobbed effort off the line after the Irish international could only find the midfielder's feet with a rushed clearance.

"Westy has saved me enough times over the games so I owed him one to be honest," said Turner.

"You have days when things do not go right but today they did and you have to make the most of them because being consistent is hard."

After the match, Aidy Boothroyd had nothing but praise for the young defender.

He said: "I'm pleased for him because a young player like Ben Turner can sometimes falter and they can go missing and drop out of league football.

"But with the talent and physical presence he's got, here is a guy who can go on to be very, very big in the game - literally. He's young but I still think there is a lot of development left in him."
