FREE: Manager praises young keeper

Posted on: Tue 17 Aug 2010

COVENTRY City manager Aidy Boothroyd this evening praised teenage goalkeeper Michael Quirke after the 18-year-old made his Sky Blues debut.

The youngster became the fourth goalkeeper to appear for City in their first three games during the 2-2 draw at Watford.

Boothroyd had started with keeper Iain Turner, who was signed at 10am this morning on an emergency loan from Everton because Keiren Westwood was ruled out due to a family bereavement.

But Turner was forced off after 15 minutes with concussion and a gash above his eye and was immediately taken to hospital.

Quirke made an outstanding save not long after being introduced before the Sky Blues slipped two goals behind with strikes either side of half-time.

David Bell's 88th minute goal and Lukas Jutkiewicz's penalty in injury time earned Boothroyd's team a draw.

The Coventry City manager said: "He did well today. He proved that he can do it in league football and that's important.

"We found about Keiren last night and I am the sort of manager who says that family comes first.

"I met Iain in a taxi just after midnight and we got him signed this morning but then he got the injury. We got him straight off to hospital and we'll get him back up to Everton tomorrow."

He added: "I was pleased for the fans that we got the point because it felt like a win after being two goals down. It showed we have character but that's not enough."
