FREE: Boothroyd on Shrews stalemate

Posted on: Wed 28 Jul 2010

COVENTRY CIty manager Aidy Boothroyd applauded another good workout for his side after they drew 0-0 with Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday night.

The Sky Blues made it six consecutive pre-season clean sheets with the goalless draw against the Shrews and Boothroyd said it was yet another pre-season clash his side could take something from.

"I thought Shrewsbury were terrific and they will be strong contenders this year. They gave us a very good workout on a big pitch and it's another pre-season friendly that we can take something away from," he said.

The City manager also commented on recent arrivals midfielder Lee Carsley and striker Lukas Jutkiewicz who made their debut for the Sky Blues against the Shrews.

"I was really pleased with both of them," he added.

"Lee lets the ball come to him, he has the ability to control the pace of the game and he sees danger early, something which comes from experience.

"I thought Lukas also showed some of the reasons why we signed him. On a few occasions he showed an outstanding first touch, he keeps the ball well in tight areas and he's good in the air so I was very pleased with both of them."

Boothroyd also spoke about the Sky Blues' impressive pre-season defensive record which has seen them not concede a goal for nine hours of football.

"That always makes me wary about when a first conceded goal is going to come but i thought we were very good defensively individually and the back four as a unit is getting better and better.

"We could have perhaps kept the ball a bit better in the second half but the lads have been working extremely hard and this Thursday will probably be the first chance the lads have had to take a little bit of a step back because they are obviously a bit fatigued and they have been putting all the effort in."
