FULL TIME: Walsall 0 Coventry City 2

Posted on: Tue 27 Jul 2010

CITY made it five games unbeaten in pre-season with goals from Freddy Eastwood and Shaun Jeffers seeing the Sky Blues comfortably past the Saddler's.

The Sky Blues made a strong start and looked to have taken the lead in the 4th minute, Roy O'Donovan finding the net following a great ball in from Gary McSheffrey - but it was deemed offside.

Minutes later Chris Hussey tested Saddler's 'keeper David Bevan with a long range effort that had the shot stopper at full stretch.

Ben Turner gifted Walsall their first real attacking chance of the game in the 13th minute, conceding a free-kick after a challenge on Alex Nicholls about 25 yards out. The Saddler's Richard Taundry took the kick which was eventually cleared by City's defence.

The Saddlers came more into the game, enjoying increasing possession and on 17 minutes McSheffrey was required to clear a ball whipped in from a Walsall corner. It dropped to Troy Deeney whose long range effort didn't test City 'keeper Keiren Westwood.

It was Deeney again chasing down the ball as it approached City's goalmouth in the 26th minute, then moments later he got his chance to drive a powerful low shot from no more than 15 yards out. His shot was blocked but fell to Nicholls whose rebound went wide of Westwood's right post.

The Saddlers enjoyed a good passage of play and in the 29th minute, Deeney took another pop at goal but the long range effort was well wide. Then trialist Chris Stokes took another long range shot after a Walsall corner.

In the final minutes of the first half, both sides had chances to take the lead. Darren Byfield dispossessed Hussey and hit a strong shot just wide.

Hussey then replied by linking up with McSheffrey on the left and eventually winning a corner for the Sky Blues. Sammy Clingan swung the ball in and McSheffrey met it with his head only to find the post before 'keeper Bevan punched the ball clear.

Both sides came out after the break and instantly started pressing to break the deadlock.

Paul Marshall's high shot forced a good fingertip save from Westwood. Then after a short passage of play Walsall were pushing again, Westwood narrowly beating Deeney to a loose ball in the area.

It was then the Sky Blues' turn to attack when, on 48 minutes, McSheffrey shot from the left just missing the target.

Minutes later Aron Gunnarsson received the ball from in plenty of space in front of goal but his shot was blocked giving City a corner. The Sky Blues continued to put pressure on Walsall but it was in the 60th minute that the breakthrough came.

Freddy Eastwood cut inside on the left edge of the Walsall area, creating enough space for him to fire past Bevan.

Walsall were looking for an instant response and Byfield nearly gave them one, shooting just wide minutes after City's opener.

A number of substitutions followed as Walsall replaced Nicholls with former City winger Julian Gray and Matt Richards made way for Steve Jones while Aidy Boothroyd took off Roy O'Donovan and sent Martin Cranie onto the field.

Walsall were still seeking an equaliser and spent a lot of time in City's half but the Sky Blues defended their lead well.

In the 76th minute, another round of changes saw Shaun Jeffers and Jordan Clarke on for McSheffrey and Carl Baker. Then again in the 84th minute more changes saw Nathan Cameron and Conor Thomas get a run out in a game that had slowed right down as City defended their lead.

The closing moments saw City pressing again, Richard Keogh taking a throw-in that Gunnarsson drove hard into the box to win a corner from the clearance.

City continued to press and Shuan Jeffers, in the dying moments of the match, headed in a cross from Michael Doyle to double City's lead.
