A MEMBER of the Coventry City Ability Counts adult team has made the grade at international level after being selected for the England Under 18 Learning Disability team.
Henley College student Sean McEnery, 18, will represent England at the forthcoming Home Nations Championships in Belfast starting on April 4.
The tall striker was one of just 20 players to be selected from an original shortlist of 30 at national trials held at Lilleshall last week.
Prior to that, Sean fought he way through a field of more than 250 players to be selected for the national trial headed up by England Under 18 Learning Disability team coach and former Sky Blues legend Dennis Mortimer.
Sean currently plays for both the Coventry City Ability Counts adult team in the Birmingham Ability Counts League as well as his college equivalent in the West Midlands BCS Ability Counts competition.
Paul Reynolds, Sky Blues in the Community Disability Development Officer and goalkeeping coach for the national disability squad, said: "Coventry City and Henley College are delighted with Sean's progress into the national squad.
"In the short 18 months that our disability programme has been running we have managed to produce an England player. It proves that we work with footballers with disabilities not only at grassroots but Elite level."
Karl Lines, from British Colleges Sport which aligns itself with the Ability Counts league, added: "Great credit must go to all the staff and colleges involved in the BCS Ability Counts League who have supported the players to date.
"It's great to see the league providing players with these opportunities to progress. We all join together in wishing Sean every success in the Home Nations Championships." |
