STEAD: Move a huge confidence boost

Posted on: Tue 16 Feb 2010

NEW Coventry City striker Jonathan Stead said he was flattered to be chosen by the Sky Blues to help move the club forward.

The 26-year-old targetman, on loan from Ipswich Town for the remainder of the season with a view to a permanent deal in the summer, said the move to the Ricoh Arena came as a huge boost to both his confidence and his career.

"It feels very good to have signed for Coventry City because it's a new challenge for me, I'm looking forward to getting some games, doing well and helping in any way I can for the final push of the season," he said.

"It's a huge confidence boost for me that a club looking to go places looks to me to help them on their way. Everything at this club has the make up to go places and I'm glad that I am seen as part of that even if it is for the short term."

"I honestly feel this that this move will help my career after discussing things with my family, it wasn't really a difficult decision to make.

"You look at everything about the club and you can tell it is going places, it's an absolutely fantastic stadium and I'm just glad that I'm seen as a part of that."

Stead, who has scored six goals in 13 starts for the Tractor Boys this season, also said he was well aware of the task ahead to get into Chris Coleman's side.

"I've been in and out of the Ipswich team this season which has been disappointing for me but I know coming here that to play it will not just be a case of turning up and walking into the side, I'm aware it is something that will have to be earned because the club already has some very good strikers.

"Six goals this season is probably not as many as I would have liked but I think I've started probably double that anyway so you always look at your ratio.

"Hopefully I can offer a bit more of a presence upfront, hold the ball up and get in behind defences. There's a good balance of strikers with different abilities at the club at the moment and I'm just pleased to be able to add to that."

The Huddersfield-born hitman, who will take up the vacant number nine shirt, said he was also looking forward to hopefully getting his Coventry career off to a good start when the Sky Blues take on Newcastle United at St James' Park on Wednesday night.

"Any player wants to play at the best stadiums, of which St James' Park is one, and you want to play against the best players.

"Newcastle are top of the league at the moment and it will be a very difficult game for us but with Coventry in such good form there is no reason why we cannot go there and get some type of result."
