CITY claimed a third consecutive pre-season victory - and the Jackson Grundy Cup - as they beat Northampton 2  - 1 at Sixfields.

Second half goals from Leon Best and starlet Sean Jeffers saw Coventry take the silverware after a toughly contested match.

Stephen Wright, Danny Fox and Aron Gunnarsson all featured in Chris Coleman's strong starting eleven however City struggled to get a handle on the match, with Ian Sampson's side taking the initiative in the first 25 minutes.

Northampton's midfield partnership of Abdul Osman and Alex Dyer look positive as they created chances for the home team - however their first real chance didn't come until the 19th minute when Dyer managed to get a shot away only for the ball to directly into the path of Dimi Konstantopolous.

City continued to chase the game and managed to pick up the pace after half an hour. Ashley Cain's shot from close range, collected by Cobblers 'keeper Chris Dunn, seemed to breathe life into the Sky Blues side. Minutes later, Leon Best pulled the trigger only to be denied by the post.

City continued to create chances but none really threatened the Northampton goal. Michael Doyle came closest with another closs range effort and Aron Gunnarsson tried his luck from distance but neither side could edge infront.

City started brighter after the break and the breakthrough came in the 52nd minute when Danny Fox found Leon Best who powered the ball past Dunn from 30 yards straight into the lower right of the Northampton goal.

City youngster Ashley Cain continued to impress on the wing and minutes later carved open an opportunity on the left. Cobblers keeper Dunn pushed the shot out but Morrison was just out of reach for the rebound.

Ben Turner was next to have a go but he couldn't direct Danny Fox's corner inside the post.

A number of changes followed for both sides over the next 20 minutes. For the Cobblers - Steve Guinan, Adebayo Akinfenwa, John Curtis, Abdul Osman and Alex Dyer all made way for Billy McKay, Seb Harris, Paul Rodgers, Dean Beckwith and Michael Jacobs. City also made five changes with Ben Turner, Aron Gunnarsson, Leon Best, Clinton Morrison and Isaac Osbourne off for James McPake, Adam Walker, Freddy Eastwood, Sean Jeffers and Marcus Hall.

Citys defence was tested a couple of times by Andy Holt and Billy McKay and it was the Cobblers substitute McKay who levelled the scores in the 84th minute, heading past Dimi Konstantopolous who had minutes before fumbled a head back from McPake.

Penalties looked like a possibility until two of Citys bright young stars linked well in the 87th to regain Citys lead and eventually give the Sky Blues the victory. Ashley Cain, who had looked lively throughout , made a pacey run down the right wing finding academy striker Sean Jeffers who headed past Dunn at the far post for his first senior goal.

At the final whistle, captain Stephen Wright was presented with the trophey to the applause of the 686 travelling City fans. City now take on Huddersfield on Saturday and will be looking to continue their run of pre-season wins.
