WARD: Rangers pen like a dream

Posted on: Tue 23 Sep 2008

SKY Blues defender Elliot Ward is not expecting a challenge to his spot-kick taking responsibilities when the Sky Blues take on Blackpool this weekend.

The highly-rated 23-year-old, who became the team's top league goal-scorer after converting his second successful penalty against QPR on Saturday, believes that he won't have a fight on his hands to retain his status as the Sky Blues penalty taker.

Ward will need a cool head should Coventry be awarded a fourth penalty of the season against Blackpool on Saturday, as the Sky Blues have not managed to score a goal at Bloomfield Road in 84 years.

The penalty miss against Sheffield United, Ward's first from seven attempts, prompted team-mate Aron Gunnarsson to say he would fight for the right to take the kicks.

"That was a big joke but it got built up as a fight!" said Ward.

"We had a chat last week before I missed and I said I would fight him and we had a good laugh about it before this game.

"I'm a bit bigger, but he's Icelandic, a Viking and they're strong boys! We get on well and everything was fine."

Far from lacking confidence after his miss at Bramall Lane, Ward says that it was a relief to be able to set the record straight when referee Mr Whitestone pointed to the spot.

"It was nice to get it so soon after the one I missed on Tuesday when it was a real disappointment not to hit the target" he explained.

"On Friday though I knew something would happen in this game, it was like a dream. I had no problem taking it."

The win against Iain Dowie's QPR means the Sky Blues are now unbeaten in three games, and the Coventry centre-back believes the team are perfectly placed to go to Bloomfield Road at the weekend and win, something they haven't managed since a 1-0 win in 1922.

"It's been a good week and it could maybe have been seven points but we got the win and it gives us confidence for the trip to Blackpool.

"We are a good team and showed that against Sheffield United where we should have had three points. It was a win at the end of the day."
