ACADEMY: Manchester City 1 Coventry 2
COVENTRY City Under 17s made up for a lack of league action on Saturday with a friendly 2-1 win over Manchester City on Wednesday, September 3.
The two sides met on neutral ground at Crewe and Alsager College in Cheshire, with Gregor Rioch's side coming out on top over the defending FA Youth Cup champions.
Both sides fielded eight first-year apprentices and three second-year apprentices, offering a glimpse of the prospective 2009/10 crop.
Goalkeeper Michael Quirke and outfield players Curtis Wynster, Jamie Greenway, Shaun Jeffers and Jacob Blackwell all earned starts after beginning on the subs bench in the club's league encounter with Liverpool the previous week.
And they payed back coach Rioch's faith by maintaining their unbeaten run since the start of the season, twice going into the lead.
Blackwell handed the Sky Blues the lead after 15 minutes although Manchester City clawed one back just before half time when Suleiman Leluu was caught in possession.
Leluu made amends in the second half though, ghosting in at the far post slot home a cross from the right wing courtesy of speedster Robert Ogleby.
Team: Quirke, Wynter, Cameron, Jones, Greenway, Grandison, Blackwell, Leluu, Fraser, Ogleby, Jeffers
