COVENTRY City Under 18's continued their encouraging start to the FA Premier Youth League with a 2-0 win over visitors Liverpool on Saturday, August 30.

The Sky Blues entertained the Merseysiders at the Alan Higgs Centre in Binley, with goals in each half from Callum Wilson and Sean Fraser enough for Gregor Rioch's side to pick up the three points.

With City coming out of the traps from the first whistle, they limited Liverpool to just one first half chance by maintaining possession and putting on a mature footballing display.

And they got their reward for unsettling the visitors after 12 minutes, a ball over the top of the Liverpool defence causing a collision between defender and 'keeper and allowing Wilson to pick up the pieces and slot home.

Rioch then opted for a tactical change to a five-man midfield to restrict Liverpool's possession, and he was left delighted by his side's ability to adapt to the change.

City 'keeper Neil Collett also earned his stripes with a good save from Liverpool's only chance of the second half.

And Coventry defender Sean Fraser punished Liverpool's inability to capitalise on their chances in the 70th minute, on hand to drive home a rebound after Matthew West's initial effort was saved.

Rioch said: "The boys were really up for this one and I had a job keeping them calm in the changing room because they all just wanted to get out and do a job.

"But once they were out there they were great. As team performances go I thought they were excellent."
