JOHNSON Clarke-Harris made Coventry City history at Morecambe as the youngest player ever to appear in a first team match.

At 16 years and 20 days, the youngster wrote his name into the club's record books as a second half substitute on a night when the Sky Blues were knocked out of the Carling Cup in the first round.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd named ten different players in his starting line-up compared to that which began Saturday's win at home to Portsmouth and he included a host of Academy prospects on the bench.

Colin Doyle made his Coventry debut on a night of celebration for the home side before a ball was kicked as they took to the field at the new Globe Arena for the first time.

The Sky Blues made all the early running against their League Two opposition. Carl Baker set up Clive Platt in the fifth minute but the big striker saw his shot blocked by Andy Parrish.

After a good spell of pressure, Coventry earned a corner in the tenth minute and, after the flag-kick was cleared to the edge of the area, Michael McIndoe shot just over the bar.

Bell was the only starter from Saturday to begin the clash at Morecambe and he was at the heart of another attack in the 13th minute, forcing another corner after nut-megging his marker on the right wing.

Chris Hussey nearly finished another good City move as he fired a shot from just inside the box with the outside of his left boot but it struck the post. Platt volleyed the rebound goalwards and Baker diverted it wide of the target.

Bell found O'Donovan with a perfectly weighted pass in the 24th minute but the Sky Blues front-man dragged his shot wide of the Morecambe post as City continued to dominate.

Hussey was getting in on the action in attack and his 29th minute shot curled wide of the Morecambe upright.

But the former AFC Wimbledon left-back was forced off two minutes later with an injury and was replaced by 17-year-old Cyrus Christie.

Morecambe were struggling to create many real chances but a long range free-kick from Laurence Wilson drifted just wide of Doyle's left hand post in the 36th minute.

The home team's first shot on target gave them the lead in first half stoppage time as Andy Fleming turned in Adam Rundle's cross from 12 yards.

Bell volleyed over the bar from Platt's guided header in the 51st minute before O'Donovan's attempted lob dropped wide.

City were not as dominant at the start of the second period as they had been at the beginning of the first half and they almost slipped a further goal behind but Phil Jevons' shot flew over.

Then, on the hour mark, Craig Stanley played a one-two with Chris Shuker but shot low against the post as City had to weather a storm.

But a minute later, the Sky Blues found themselves two down as Fleming found space in the box again and stroked home past Doyle from another Rundle cross.

Johnson Clarke-Harris was introduced in the 68th minute to make Coventry City history but couldn't prevent the Sky Blues from slipping out of the Carling Cup.
