COVENTRY City were dramatically knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle by Pompey after a dramatic last-gasp extra time goal.
Sky Blues striker Leon Best hit a sweet half volley past Portsmouth shot stopper Asmir Begovic after 21 minutes to hand the Sky Blues the advantage.
But City defender was hard done by despite a superb performance with an own goal past 'keeper Keiren Westwood in the last minute of the 90 to take the game into extra time and Aaron Mokoena nicked a winner with the last kick of extra time to send Coventry out.
It was Wright who actually got the first shot of the night on target after nine minutes, linking up with David Bell before beating two defenders only for his shot from 15 yards to be stopped by Pompey 'keeper Asmir Begovic.
But City still managed to open the scoring after 21 minutes with just their second shot of the night when Best struck a superb shot past the Portsmouth shotstopper.
A long ball from Keiren Westwood found the head of Bell whose connection flicked the ball into the path of Best who shot on the turn through traffic, leaving Begovic with no chance.
Westwood had to be alert four minutes later though when Kevin-Prince Boateng broke through the back four and tried to poke home an equaliser from an acute angle inside the six-yard area, only to be denied by Westwood's legs.
The City did 'keeper then did the same again a minute before the break when Boateng worked his way inside only to batter his effort off Westwood's lower half.
Aron Gunnarsson then saw the half out with a header just past Begovic's far post from McIndoe's corner deep into injury time.
Gunnarsson could have doubled City's lead on 54 minutes when Best cut a ball back on the goalline, only for Mokoena's boot to get in the way of his shot.
Best almost doubled his only tally just after the hour when a lovely floated crossfield ball from McIndoe found him lurking at the back of the Pompey area, his volley going just over the bar.
Pompey substitute Danny Webber went close with 20 minutes to go, chasing a long ball and hitting a first time half-volley across the face of goal and just wide of Westwood's far post.
City came within a whisker of a second goal four minutes from time when Gunnarsson's long range effort was spilled by Begovic, Morrison nicking the ball away but his ball back into the box being cut out and cleared.
But Pompey got an equaliser at the death when a free kick from the left popped off Stephen Wright's head and past Keiren Westwood off the underside of his crossbar, taking the game to extra time.
The extra half hour was then a relatively quiet affair but for three moments in second half extra time, one of which ended the game.
First Webber beat the offside trap to go one-on-one with Westwood with 11 minutes to go, the City 'keeper pulling off a good low save.
Utaka did the same four minutes later, this time Wright helping the City 'keeper to deny the striker a dramatic strike.
It wasnot to be for the Sky Blues though when, with the last kick of the game, Mokoena headed past Westwood off a corner from eight yards out to send the Sky Blues out of the cup.
