ACADEMY: Coventry City 2 Norwich City 2

Posted on: Fri 09 Apr 2010

COVENTRY City Under 18s displayed a strong fighting spirit within the camp to fight back from two goals down to earn a point against Norwich City last Saturday.

Coming off the back of an unlucky 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic the week before, Gregor Ricoh's side showed a stubborn refusal to back down as youngster Josh Ruffels and established academy striker Shaun Jeffers both got on the scoresheet to earn the Sky Blues a well-earned point.

It was a tale of two halves for Coventry who found themselves behind on just nine minutes when the Caneries' Patrick Demola raced through the midfield and struck a shot from the edge of the area, only finding its way into the net after taking a fortunate looping deflection.

Norwich were two up in the 23rd minute when George Francomb coolly slotted a spotkick to double the deficit after Coventry defender Jordan Clarke was adjudged to have pushed Josh Dawkin in the Sky Blues' area.

The Sky Blues came right back though despite the disappointing start and sent both a free-kick and corner kick whizzing past Remi Matthews' goalmouth.

Jeffers had an effort saved just after the half hour mark saved by Matthews and Coventry went close twice more before the break but could not find a crucial goal.

An 'on-the-pitch' half-time team talk from Sky Blues boss Rioch seemed to do the trick though as Coventry came out for the second half with a much more dangerous look.

Norwich 'keeper Matthews was forced to make an excellent save from Cyrus Christie's free-kick on 68 minutes, pushing the set piece effort onto his bar.

But Coventry stuck to their guns and were rewarded with a final ten-minute double salvo from Ruffels and Jeffers to grab a point.

First it was Ruffels who did supremely well to tuck a shot into the net from the edge of the area after being teed up by Callum Wilson.

Jeffers then finally got the goal he had been threatening late on when he broke clear of the Ipswich back four and held his nerve to slot the equaliser past Matthews and hand the Sky Blues a point.
