ACADEMY: Coventry City 5 Portsmouth 0

Posted on: Mon 21 Sep 2009

A RAMPANT Coventry City Under 18s put in a five star performance as they demolished Portsmouth in style at the Alan Higgs Centre.

Gregor Rioch's men showed clinical finishing in the 5-0 rout, extending the Sky Blues' winning run to four consecutive games in the Premier Academy League.

Callum Wilson and Suli Leluu both converted first half penalties, either side of a Rob Ogleby header from a picture perfect training ground set-piece routine.

And Jacob Blackwell and Joel Grandison both added to Pompey's misery with second half solo efforts, as City cruised to a comfortable victory.

Portsmouth started with a single striker who was often isolated from the crowded midfield, but the visitor's stubborn backline coped well with resilient Sky Blues pressure early on.

The deadlock was eventually broken on 21 minutes, when Luke Bottomer was given space on the right to deliver a diagonal cross which Ogleby headed into the path of his strike-partner Wilson, who was bundled to the ground by his marker.

The second-year apprentice picked himself up to tuck the spot-kick to the goalkeepers' left, notching his third goal of the season.

The Sky Blues deservedly doubled the lead five minutes later, when the two strikers combined again to punish Pompey's static defending.

Jamie Greenway's Gary McAllister-esque chipped corner, was flicked on by Wilson at the near post, and Ogleby rose above his marker to nod past the 'keeper, making it four goals in four games for Coventry's top scorer.

City played the last eight minutes of the half with ten men after Wilson was caught painfully on the ankle by a late challenge. Despite the player disadvantage, Ogleby sprung a 50-yard counter-attack and was brought down inside the area.

Leluu took over penalty duties, emphatically blasting down the middle ensuring Coventry went into half time with a three goal advantage.

The Sky Blues defense, lead by the calm and collected Nathan Cameron, had restricted Portsmouth to speculative long range efforts all match, but the visitors' best opportunity for a consolation came shortly after the break when City goalkeeper Michael Quirke spilled a cross, and Pompey striker Pablo Navas Alors reacted quickly, but could only fire the rebound wide of an open goal.

Never content with the score line, Coventry continually threatened the Portsmouth goal, and the most spectacular strike of the day was scored by Jacob Blackwell on 70 minutes.

The 17-yeard old left winger showed deft close control to engineer space between two defenders as he cut in from the left, and curled a deflected shot, right-footed, in to the top corner of goalkeeper Tommy Smith's net.

And Joel Grandison wrapped things up on 81 minutes, using his lightning pace to burst through Portsmouth's defense before flicking the ball past Smith to make it five different goal scorers, as Gregor Rioch's men continued their drive towards the top of the division.
