COVENTRY City Under 18s picked up their first win of the 2009/10 Premier Academy League season after beating Everton 2-1 at the Alan Higgs Centre on Saturday.
Striker Rob Ogleby and midfielder Jacob Blackwell both opened their goalscoring accounts for Gregor Rioch's side.
Assistant academy manager Richard Stevens took the coaching reins in Rioch's absence and said he was delighted with the result against a side which fielded three overage players but still never got the better of the Sky Blues.
Blackwell put City ahead five minutes before the hour mark and Ogleby added a second 13 minutes later with Everton pulling a goal back two minutes from time.
"Everton are a very strong academy but we were by far the better team on the day and I thought the lads coped really well," Stevens said.
"We have lost to Everton early on in the season for the last couple of campaigns but this result shows how we have progressed I think.
"We had a good five or six chances we never managed to convert and with Everton getting a late goal back and putting on a bit of pressure in injury time it might be a bit of a reminder to take our chances when we get them and it was also a good exercise in staying resolute at the back.
"But the boys stuck to their task, we're very proud of them and we're all lookingforward to Fulham away on Saturday.
