Young City suffer Leeds defeat

18 December 2013

Despite Lewis Rankin's opener, City's Under-21s were unable to grab a deserved win...

Coventry City Under-21s were unable to get a deserved victory against Leeds United as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Adam Barton and Billy Daniels started at Liberty Way for Under-21s in difficult conditions as the wind swept in a fierce rain.

The Whites dominated the early possession and had the first chance of the game in the 19th minute.

Dominic Poleon, who has been on loan at Sheffield United this season, raced through three City defenders before his low effort was well saved by Alex Gott and cleared by Ryan Haynes.

The Sky Blues took this as a signal to press forward and should have gone ahead two minutes later.

James Maddison was able to slot in a brilliant through-ball to Ben Maund who raced on goal, but put his shot wide.

City began to dominate the affair and Ryan Haynes' cross was headed wide by Lewis Rankin just before the half-hour.

The home side made their dominance tell in the 36th minute when Lewis Rankin was put in behind and slotted home.

City were only in front for three minutes as an early left-sided cross found Afolobi Coker who looped his header over Alex Gott.

The Whites' captain Zac Thompson blasted home a 25-yard free-kick on the stroke of half-time to put Leeds ahead at the break.

The second half was few on chances as the rain intensified at Liberty Way.

Aaron Phillips was able to get past three players on the right before turning inside his defender, but his fierce effort was well saved in the 56th minute.

Billy Daniels was pushed up in behind Maund role as the Sky Blues controlled much of the play in the midfield.

Ben Maund almost pulled City level when he collected a brilliant cross-field ball by Louis Garner but his 25-yard strike was well saved in the 76th minute.

Despite some neat passing and control, City were unable to break through the stubborn Leeds defence as the away side took the win.
