'I can't believe I didn't score'

Callum Wilson was shocked he didn't cap a fine display with a goal...

Coventry City striker Callum Wilson was shocked he didn’t score after the Under-21s lost 3-1 at the Ricoh Arena to Leicester City.

Jacob Blyth scored a brace and Marko Futacs converted from the spot to seal the win for the Foxes.

Wilson played a pivotal role in City’s only goal of the game as he held off two Leicester defenders to back-heel to Danny Philliskirk who slotted home.

The 21-year old brought two amazing saves out of Conrad Logan in the second half and Wilson was disappointed not to net during the match.

The City striker said: “I would have really liked to score a goal in the game but to get 90 minutes of football at any level is always positive.

“It is a good game to play in because playing at the Ricoh Arena is always a good experience. I don’t know how the keeper has kept out the two chances I had in the second half so it was annoying.

“The second save, in particular, was brilliant so it is a shame I didn’t get on the score-sheet.  I think I was a bit isolated at times but it is good for me to play up front on my own as that is what the first team play.

“I was pleased with the way I played and that is what you have to use the Under-21 games for. It is important to put plenty of effort into every match you play, whether it is the first team or not.”

Cody McDonald has recently been recalled from his loan spell at League Two side Gillingham, which has increased the competition in Wilson’s position.

The Coventry-born forward hopes he can keep in contention for a first team spot with hard work in training and impressive performances for the Under-21s.

He added: “The first team are doing well at the minute with Leon (Clarke) scoring plenty of goals but if I can keep up good performances in the Under-21s, then hopefully I will get a chance.

“With my contract up in the summer, I am looking to make a good impression and try and score goals in every game I play in.

“I have to keep trying hard and Cody (McDonald) has just come back so he has gone ahead of me in the order. I need to be patient and when I get that chance, I need to take it.”
