Edjenguele hoping to have the 'edge'

Sky Blues defender William Edjenguele hopes to keep place...

Sky Blues defender William Edjenguele is hoping he has the ‘edge’ to stay in Coventry City’s starting XI ahead of the weekend’s game against Crewe.

The French defender made his competitive debut for the Sky Blues in Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Birmingham City in the Capital One Cup.

The 25-year old had an impressive debut for City and he hopes he can keep his place in Richard Shaw’s side for the trip to Gresty Road.

Edjenguele said: “I really enjoyed Tuesday and it was great to be on the pitch representing the club. To win against a big club like Birmingham in my first game was really good.

“It was an incredible feeling for me and my teammates. Football is all about challenges and that was a big one.

“My next challenge is to keep my place in the side and keep improving my game for the club. It was difficult on Tuesday as it was my first game for a while and with extra time as well.

“Hopefully, the fans will think I did well. It was a surprise to be put straight in the side but you have to be ready. When I didn’t play before, I just kept working and when my time came, I gave my best.

“I am hoping to keep my place in the side and help my teammates do well for the club.”

Edjenguele has had previous spells in Greece, Switzerland and France before moving to the Ricoh Arena on a free transfer in the summer.

Despite his happiness at making his debut for the club, he also stressed it is about a team effort this year as Coventry look to get out of League One.

He added: “Of course it was a big moment for me to get into the side but it is not just about me and how I am playing.

“We have a whole squad here and we have to be working together to make sure we achieve what we need to achieve.

“I am really happy to be involved but there will be times when I’m not and as a footballer, you except that.

“We have a good dressing room here and we are all working towards the same thing.”
