City Under-21s secure late point

3 September 2013

Billy Daniels and Mathieu Manset both score late on to secure a 2-2 draw against the Tykes...

Coventry City Under-21s secured a dramatic late point against Barnsley with Billy Daniels and Mathieu Manset netting for the Sky Blues.

The Tykes went into a 2-0 lead after goals from John Cofie in the first half and Dale Jennings after the break, but a spirited City side grabbed a point due to two late goals.

City faced a difficult test in an experienced Barnsley side which had Welsh international Lewin Nyatanga, Northern Ireland international Paddy McCourt and former Bayern Munich player Dale Jennings all start at the Sperrin Brewery Stadium.

In a bright start to the game for the Sky Blues, City had two early chances in the first 10 minutes with captain Jordan Willis and Adam Barton going close.

City won a free-kick just outside the area after Louis Garner was fouled and from the resulting free-kick, Willis had a free header from six yards out which Barnsley keeper Christian Dibble did well to collect in the 7th minute.

From another set-piece, just three minutes later, Billy Daniels played it short to the edge of the area and Barton curled his effort narrowly over the bar.

Against the run of play, the away side took the lead in the 16th minute. Jason Scotland used his experience to shield three City defenders from the ball before playing Cofie down the right side for him to slide home under keeper Lee Burge.

City continued to press Barnsley and had many chances to get themselves level before the break. Garner curled his shot just past the left-hand post after good work from Leon Lobjoit and Lewis Rankin had a close-range header saved just past the half-hour from a Daniels free-kick.

The Sky Blues started the second half well but fell further behind to a brilliant Jennings goal. George Smith got down the left wing, passed inside to the former Bayern Munich man and found the top corner from just outside the area in the 54th minute.

Substitutes Ivor Lawton and James Maddison both had long range efforts saved before City began a late fight-back in the last two minutes.

After good work down the left wing from B Trialist, Daniels tucked home at the far post to get City back in the game.

City secured a point two minutes into stoppage time when B Trialist was fouled in the area by Barnsley keeper Dibble and Mathieu Manset stepped up to tuck home the penalty.
