"It was poor. There's a lot of work which needs to be done." - Coventry City's Tony Mowbray

The City boss admitted the performance against the League Two side 'wasn't what he was looking for'...

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has admitted the performance was 'poor' after the 0-0 draw against Oxford United.

In a game of few chances, Adam Armstrong created City's best chance when he crossed for James Maddison, but he couldn't find the net at Nuneaton Town's Liberty Way.

Oxford went close in the second-half as former City midfielder Josh Ruffles hit the post late on a week before the start of the Football League season.

Mowbray admitted there is a lot more work which needs to be done ahead of the Wigan game at the Ricoh Arena next week.

The City boss said: "It was poor. There's no covering that up and it isn't the way I'd like to see us play.

"We've played much better than that in this pre-season but today, we were dominated by Oxford which was disappointing.

"There's a lot more work which needs to be done next week and in a way, we've been able to get that type of performance out of the system.

"I've had a pre-season where we've lost every game and been flying, and the exact opposite. We've just got to make sure we improve and work hard this week ahead of the opener."

City failed to find the net against the League Two side and Mowbray admitted he is still looking at forward options.

He added: "I've made no secret that I want to bring in some more players, I think we need to add to our forward line as we're just lacking a bit.

"Adam Armstrong did well but he didn't play the role like I'd like him to so we're going to work with him over the next week as you can tell he's got the quality.

"We might not get the deals over the line before the start of the season but that doesn't concern me as we need to get the right players in for the entire season."
