City boss labels 4-1 win over Stanley a good day at the office

Coventry City boss Andy Thorn labelled his side's pre-season win over Accrington Stanley as a good day at the office.

The Sky Blues ended a run of four pre-season defeats on the bounce with a 4-1 win at the Crown Ground which saw Cody McDonald and John Fleck get a brace each, one of which saw Fleck net a first half wonder goal.

Fleck opened the scoring from the spot midway through the first half with McDonald adding a second just moments later. Fleck then lobbed Accrington 'keeper Ian Dunbavin from 35 yards four minutes before the break with McDonald adding City's fourth six minutes into the second half, Karl Sheppard netting a consolations for the hosts.

Thorn said: "I'm obviously pleased with the result but there's still alot of work to be done. It's another step for us in pre-season, we wanted to try a few different systems over the past few games because it's a long season and we did that again today but we've started concentrating more on our shape over the past two days and I think you could see evidence of that here.

"Will still need to start putting the gloss on stuff but we need a foundation to build on and today definitely helped with that.

"To be honest I hadn't even looked at it as having lost the last four games, I wasn't looking at it like that. It's pre-season where two of the last three teams we've played were promoted last season and for us it's about trying new things and seeing what works and what doesn't because you want to find that kind of stuff out now, not when it matters when the season starts.

"Yes we won 4-1 but there was still stuff I wasn't happy with and there's still stuff I want to nail down and we've got two more pre-season games to do that."

Thorn also had kind words for youngster Billy Daniels who played the full 90 minutes for the Sky Blues as well as giving updates on injuries.

"I thought Billy did really well, I was chuffed to bits for him because you could see him pushing for that starting place. I thought Flecky was excellent, Cody looked really sharp, Kev Kilbane was solid and Richard Wood and William Edjenguele were strong as well."

On the subject of injury substitutions Thorn added: "Flecky was ok. He got a bit of cramp which, on the strength of his performance, he was allowed to so I took him off as a precaution and Reece Brown jarred his knee so obviously we needed to look after him."
