"We tried a new approach with the players. There is still work to be done." - Coventry City boss Steven Pressley

The City boss revealed he tried a new experimental formation at Spytty Park to achieve 'more flexibility' next season...

Coventry City boss Steven Pressley said his side's 1-0 defeat away to Newport County was a reminder that there is still work to be done before the start of the season.

Ismail Yakubu's 19th minute header separated the two sides at Spytty Park but Pressley said he was not overly concerned about the result and that the game was a natural part of the planned progression for his side before the start of the 2014/15 campaign in just under two weeks time.

"We experimented tonight with a 3-5-2 formation which we wanted to do during pre-season because I want us to have more flexibility and be able to adapt to certain games next season," he said.

"It's a relatively new approach for the players. We worked on it yesterday but it's early days and we didn't quite get the balance right in the first half and as a result didn't control the game enough.

"We did it better in the second half, the balance was better and we created some good opportunities. The interchange between both sets of strikers was excellent so there were positive signs but there is still work to be done.

"There are a number of things we need to improve on but this is our first British-type game since coming back from tour and it was perfect for us. I always say to get the European opposition to work on fitness and then come back and work on the more bread and butter type football that we will have to deal with throughout the season.

"It's been a challenge for us but I said to the players in the dressing room that these games are perfect because it reminds you that there's a lot of work to be done between now and the start of the season but I'm sure we'll get there."
