Pressley hoping for striker loan deal

25 March 2014

The City manager also explained the reasons for Chuba Akpom's return to Arsenal...

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has revealed the club are still in the market for a striker ahead of the match against Stevenage tomorrow night.

Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom returned to his parent club yesterday after six weeks with the Sky Blues, having failed to find the net.

Callum Wilson and Aston Villa loanee Nathan Delfouneso are the only senior strikers at City as the club prepare for their last nine matches of the 2013/14 League One season.

With the emergency loan window set to close at 5pm on Thursday, March 27th, Pressley says he is still looking for another striking option.

The City boss said: "We're still looking to bring in a striker. We need another option up there after Chuba returned to Arsenal.

"Chuba returned because I felt his situation where he was returning to Arsenal for certain games, didn't give him the chance to fully concentrate on his work for this club and that's what we need at the moment.

"Steve (Waggott), Tim (Fisher) and Joy (Seppala) have been very supportive of me when I have looked to bring in new players. It has never been a matter of resource.

"As I have said from the turn of the year, it isn't through a lack of effort but because there is very little out there. We're going to keep trying though and hopefully get someone in before Thursday."

The Sky Blues go in to the game against Stevenage at Sixfields tomorrow night having suffered a 3-1 defeat at Brentford at the weekend.

After reviewing the performance of the team from the weekend, Pressley had one major point to stress to his City side.

He added: "We've got to stop conceding silly goals. The goals we conceded from the weekend wasn't good enough for me when I've watched it back.

"Two of the goals come from our own corners and if you look at the statistics, we actually had more efforts on goal so there is no reason why we can't win these games.

"It is something we have seen a lot this season. Individual errors have let us down this season and we need to work harder to combat these issues.

"If we are going to get the results we need from the rest of the season, we can't go on conceding the goals we are."
