The Sky Blues drop further points at home as they to continue a disappointing run of form in 2016...

Coventry City squandered the chance to gain three points on rival play-off hopefuls with a 1-0 loss at home to Colchester United.

The goal was scored early on by Gavin Massey, who latched on to clever forward play from Elliot Lee.

City looked to have played their way back in to the game in the latter stages of the first-half and continued to provide attacking threat through Jacob Murphy and Joe Cole.

The brightest spark was undoubtedly new signing Jodi Jones, who caused Colchester’s backline trouble all game and claimed the man of the match award for his troubles.

Captain Sam Ricketts spoke in the wake of the defeat: “For long spells we passed the ball well, probably dominated the game. We missed a penalty, should have had another one.

“Were there any more clear cut chances? Probably not. In that respect it is disappointing. Reice didn’t have too much to do. It’s fine margins, maybe we aren’t asking enough questions.”

The Sky Blues are now eight points adrift of League One’s top six, with seven games left to play.

Ricketts added: “We are still trying to win games, playing the way which we know suits us. First-half we got in good areas. Latter end of the first-half we were pressing and a goal looked like a matter of time in coming.

“I don’t know what it is with Coventry, it’s unbelievable how many [penalties] we have missed. It lets teams off the hook.

“You never say it’s it, if you win the next seven games you’ll be in the play-offs. But with every defeat and other results going against us, the task gets harder that’s for sure.”
