'Hope the manager was watching' - Garner

7 April 2014

City forward Louis Garner also admitted his disappointment at being denied a hat-trick...

Coventry City forward Louis Garner has revealed he is hoping to make an impact in the first-team after an impressive brace for the Under-21s against Birmingham City.

Demarai Gray put the home side ahead before Garner's classy free-kick from 25-yards out leveled the tie at the break.

It was Garner who claimed his brace and put City ahead in the 52nd minute when George Thomas found the in-form forward on the edge of the area to slot home.

Reece Brown equalised ten minutes later but Garner had the chance to get his hat-trick and the three points for City in the last 10 minutes, but his penalty was saved by Callum Preston.

Having started the last five Under-21s games, scoring three goals, the City forward admitted he is delighted with his form.

Garner said: "I'm really happy with the two goals today but a bit annoyed I wasn't able to get the hat-trick as the keeper saved my penalty.

"It was a good performance from the team so it would have been nice to reward that with three points.

"I'm really happy with my form at the moment. I think I've definitely improved since I've played down the middle. I played out wide for the Academy but I enjoy the central role as I can do more in games.

"My finishing has definitely improved and it was good to link up with Lewis Rankin and George Thomas up front today as I think the combination work between us was a real positive."

Garner has made three substitute appearances for the first team this season, against Leyton Orient, Stevenage and Notts County.

The City forward has said he hopes to force his way into the first-team squad after recent performances for the Under-21s.

He added: "I hope the manager was watching today as I thought I did well. I scored the goals but I've really tried to work hard when I don't have the ball.

"There is a big emphasis on that at the club and I hope I've got better at it. Obviously, I'm always looking to improve and I still think I can get better.

"The games over the last month have helped as I'm now playing consistent football. You get better with games, it's as simple as that.

"I'd like to think I could do a job for the first team but it is up to the manager at the end of the day. I've just got to work hard and prove it to the coaching staff that I'm good enough to play for Coventry."
