Cyrille Regis nets two of City's four goals on the final day of the 1984/85 season as the club stays in the top flight by a single point...

SUNDAY 26TH MAY 1985: Coventry City put four passed high-flying Everton to secure safety during the 1984/85 season.

With Division One title winning Everton the final opponents of the season and the Sky Blues in need of three points to stay up, it looked like City were destined for Division Two.

But lifeline number three miraculously arrived on a gloriously sunny Sunday morning at Highfield Road. Household names of the 80s era; Southall, Van den Hauwe, Ratcliffe, Richardson, Steven, Sharp, Bracewell and Sheedy all lined up for table topping Everton, who had already secured their status as Division One champions.

With Everton having little to play for, the league winners were destroyed by a rampant Sky Blues in an 11.30am kick-off. A season’s best 21,586 raised the roof of Highfield Road as goals from Cyrille Regis (2), Micky Adams and Terry Gibson relegated Norwich City and kept Coventry in the top flight.

Prior to the game, Regis had only netted three times in 31 appearances. Reflecting on the win, the striker said: “This has to be one of the most satisfying days of my career.”
