30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY: Coventry City secure Division One survival in style against champions Everton!

26 May 2015

Cyrille Regis netted twice alongside strikes from Micky Adams and Terry Gibson to cap off one of the greatest escapes of all time...

30 years ago today, Coventry City celebrated one of the finest wins in their history which capped off a miraculous escape from relegation.

The Sky Blues had won their last two games against Stoke City and Luton Town which - after looking dead and buried - meant a win against Everton on the final day of the season would secure Division One safety.

But the Toffees were the Division One champions and European Cup Winners Cup holders at the time, so it was no mean feat against one of the best teams in English football history.

Led by Don Mackay in the glorious sunshine at Highfield Road, the 11.30 kick-off started ferociously and Cyrille Regis netted a wonderful header to open the scoring.

Regis was then influential in setting up Micky Adams to double the advantage, but just before the break, City conceded as Paul Wilkinson powered in a header.

But the Sky Blues could not be stopped when Terry Gibson, who put in a man-of-the-match display, forced a good save which Regis latched on to to tap in his second.

The remarkable day was rounded off as Gibson deservedly notched one himself in front of a season's best attendance of 21,596 to relegate Norwich City and secure one of the greatest escapes of all time.

Here are the highlights from that wonderful day!
