The Sky Blues defender also revealed that he listened to the Crawley game on the radio and was disappointed he couldn't help finish the job...

Matthew Pennington was delighted that Coventry City stayed in League One after listening to the Crawley clash on the radio.

The defender injured his ankle in the 3-1 defeat to Crewe and missed the crucial final day game at the checkatrade.com stadium.

Pennington wanted to "finish the job" but was delighted his team-mates could keep the Sky Blues in the division.

He said: "Obviously I'm rehabbing my ankle at the moment, I really wanted to get down to Crawley and I'm gutted I missed the game, I wanted to finish the job.

"It's been a really boring time at the moment, I'm literally just elevating and resting the ankle.

"I had to rest it and couldn't come to the Crawley game, but I was listening to it on the radio and it was nervy to say the least!

"It would have been better to play in it! But a club like Coventry City shouldn't be in League One let alone League Two, so it was a relief when the full-time whistle went.

"I'm pleased the club have stayed up and can hopefully push on at the other end of the table next season.

"There are some great people, both staff and players, at the club and I'm pleased for everyone that they stayed up."

Securing survival capped off a disappointing season for the Sky Blues, but Pennington admitted that he enjoyed his time with the club.

The 20-year old made 25 appearances for City and believes his spell has helped him improve as a player.

"I've really enjoyed my time with Coventry City," he continued.

"I feel I've improved playing week-in-week-out against some experienced players and playing with some experienced pros.

"I've played both at right-back and centre-back and I've thoroughly enjoyed it, everyone has been great and I feel that at this stage in my career, the loan spell was ideal as I want to keep learning and improving.

"I think a young player needs to learn and play games, I've been lucky enough to do that with a big club and I'm pleased with how things have gone."
