"I enjoyed my debut and I want to get consistent games during my time here." - Coventry City's Matthew Pennington

The 20-year old defender also believes City were unlucky not to win the 0-0 draw against in-form Walsall...

Coventry City defender Matthew Pennington has revealed he was eager to get out on loan to gain Football League experience.

The 20-year old enjoyed a solid debut against Midlands side Walsall as City were unlucky not to beat Dean Smith's Saddlers side.

The Everton loanee had only trained with the Sky Blues for one day before the 0-0 draw at the Ricoh Arena after he signed a month's youth loan this week.

Pennington wants to get a consistent run of games under his belt during his time at the Ricoh Arena and believes City were unlucky to draw.

The defender said: "I really enjoyed my debut. I'm really glad to get out and play some Football League games, some competitive fixtures.

"I'd like to get a consistent run of games whilst I'm here and glad that the club came in for me as it will be a great experience.

"I thought we played well today but couldn't put our chances away. It was frustrating but that is football.

"I had one where I could have headed home but I got a little nudge. We went right until the end though and to pick up a point is better than losing."

The Warrington-born defender has spent most of the season playing for the Everton Under-21s side and he believes he'll learn much more playing League football.

He added: "They were difficult conditions to play in with that pitch so we had to play the ball long at times. The performance was good and I was happy with the clean sheet.

"I like getting forward. It is part of my game but I know I have to become a more-rounded player and that's why I want to come out on loan.

"Under-21s football isn't as competitive as League football. There isn't any pressure on the result so there isn't much urgency in the game.

"To develop as a young player, you've got to play competitively and hopefully, I'll be able to do that over the next month."
