Oldham Athletic 0-1 Coventry City

29 September 2012

City record first League win of the season...

Coventry City secured their first win of their League One campaign with a late winner from second-half substitute Cody McDonald.

Mark Robins' side finally brought an end to their winless start to the season as well as a run of five consecutive defeats as McDonald came off the bench five minutes into the second half to tap home the winner at the end of 90 minutes.

The Sky Blues boss did not tinker much with the side that suffered a heavy Capital One Cup defeat away to Arsenal in midweek, making just two changes to his starting line up to bring striker David McGoldrick and midfielder Conor Henderson who were respectively cup-tied and ineligible for the clash at the Emirates.

It was the home side that registered the first effort of the day after just two minutes when Christian Montano tried his luck from 20 yards, forcing City 'keeper Joe Murphy to tip the ball over his bar.

Jose Baxter was next up for Oldham cutting inside from the left three minutes later before firing an effort straight at Murphy who held onto the ball.

With half an hour gone they were the only two clear cut chances as the Sky Blues tried to string their passes together but were guilty of missing out on the final pass that would have caused the Athletic back four problems.

The scrappy battle in midfield then continued for the remainder of the half as neither side came any closer to opening the scoring until McGoldrick flicked a header just over Dean Bouzanis' crossbar after a left sided cross from Gary McSheffrey.

The Sky Blues also enjoyed a solid spell in the first five minutes of the second half as Conor Henderson bent a 20-yard effort just around Bouzanis' far post before being replaced by McDonald.

Oldham went closer four minutes before the hour though when Baxter drove a low effort from distance that rebounded off the foot of Murphy's post.

They then went even closer than that after 64 minutes when Lee Croft's low fired-in cross into the six-yard box caused chaos in front of City's goalmouth as equal numbers of bodies threw themselves at the ball to both turn it into the net and keep it out.

Latics striker Matt Derbyshire then registered two weak efforts on target inside the next five minutes, the first a header straight at Murphy from eight yards and then a shot from 12 yards which went the same way after he turned Richard Wood.

Sandwiched in between was a half effort for McDonald who got around the back of Jean Yves M'Voto and missed out on connecting with a superb left sided delivery from Jamie Reckord by inches.

City then very nearly opened the scoring after 73 minutes when McGoldrick got around M'Voto at the byline and cut back for McDonald whose effort was blocked on the line from Cliff Byrne.

Reece Wabara then very nearly put the ball in his own net with 13 minutes to go when he tried to head Carl Baker's cross back to his 'keeper only to almost put it beyond him, Bouzanis getting a fingertip to it to keep it out.

McDonald went a whisker away again with 12 minutes to go when substitute John Fleck's whipped in cross from the left almost found the striker at the back post.

Reckord then forced a superb low save out of Bouzanis with eight minutes to go after he was released by Fleck after a fine flowing move from City, Reckord aiming just inside the near post and the Oldham 'keeper doing well to keep it out.

It was the Sky Blues who grabbed the late goal though courtesy of McDonald who turned in a pin-point low cross from Reckord just as the game entered the end of normal time.

It was nearly two for City soon after when McGoldrick's effort just inside the area took a deflection and fell into the path of McDonald whose powerful half volley was palmed away by Bouzanis.

City did not need a second though as they saw out four minutes of added time to pick up their first three-point haul of 2012/13.
