MATCH REPORT: Coventry City 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday - Sky Blues unfortunate to lose

2 December 2015

Sky Blues dominant in second-half but couldn't quite convert the chances in a good display...

Coventry City Under-21s were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield Wednesday, but were unfortunate to be beaten after dominating the second-half.

The Sky Blues had a number of chances, largely thanks to the impressive Ryan Haynes on the left-hand side.

The first opportunity for City came after just 18 minutes, when a corner drifted into the back-post and Lateef Elford-Alliyu nodded it over from two yards when it looked a certain goal.

But Lee Glover's men found themselves a goal behind in the 37th minute when Jack Stobbs got on the end of a cutback in the area and curled a finish into the left corner.

The Sky Blues started the second-half in dominant fashion and were almost level second after the break when first-year scholar Jak Hickman got on the end of a cross but blazed over when well placed in the area.

Bassala Sambou then went close as he chipped the ball over two defenders and hit a firm left footed shot in the area but it flew over.

Haynes was extremely influential on the left in City's dominant performance and he layed on a cross with 17 minutes to play which Elford-Alliyu was so close to getting a toe on for the equaliser.

Sambou then went close again with ten minutes left, as he skinned his man in the area and got in an effort on the right side of the box which fizzed just wide of the far left post, where Jordan Shipley was also inches away from meeting Sambou's shot for a tap in.

In the 87th minute, Elford-Alliyu went close again as he nodded Haynes' left-sided cross at the near post narrowly over.

But the Sky Blues couldn't make their dominance pay as they were well on top and unlucky not to score.
