U21: Leeds United 2-1 Coventry City

27 March 2014

Despite a dominant first-half from City and Louis Garner's goal, the Sky Blues lose by one goal in Yorkshire...

Coventry City Under-21s fell to defeat against Leeds United despite a battling performance.

The Sky Blues started were dominant in the half-hour of the game and deservedly went ahead through Louis Garner.

Lewis Walters leveled for the Whites five minutes before half-time and Affy Coker headed home with 25 minutes remaining to secure the home win for Leeds.

Mark Marshall and Dylan McGeouch both started the game for the Sky Blues as they looked to get some valuable playing time.

City almost got off to the worst possible start when Ryan Haynes conceded a penalty in the 8th minute. Zac Thompson stepped up but goalkeeper Lee Burge produced a brilliant save to deny the Whites.

Ian Foster's side improved and went ahead in the 19th minute. McGeouch produced a brilliant diagonal ball over the Leeds defence to find Garner who chipped the keeper brilliantly from outside the area.

City continued to create chances and almost scored one of the goals of the season just three minutes later. A brilliant flowing move which included seven City players should have produced a goal, but Garner's header was tipped around the post from a McGeouch cross.

It was the dangerous Garner broke through the Leeds defence once again just past the half-hour, but after shrugging off two defenders, he could only put his low effort wide before Leeds equalised.

Luke Booker got down the right side of the City defence and his low cross was turned home by Walters to equalise for the home side in the 42nd minute.

After the break, City should take extended their lead through James Maddison. The Academy striker broke through the United defence, rounded the keeper but was denied by a brilliant block in the 60th minute.

Garner struck the post only a minute later with a powerful effort but the Sky Blues were left to rue that missed chance as Leeds took the lead just five minutes when Coker headed home a right-sided corner.

Leeds striker Chris Dawson was sent off with 20 minutes remaining and City piled forward in search of an equaliser.

Substitute Ryan Quinn's half-volley was well saved in the last 10 minutes but the Sky Blues couldn't find the goal their play deserved.
