Sky Blues lead with first half double

4 February 2014

Franck Moussa and Andy Webster give the Sky Blues a healthy half time advantage over Bristol City at Ashton Gate

Coventry City head into the break with a two-goal lead over Bristol City at a rain-sodden Ashton Gate.

Franck Moussa's fine individual goal opened the scoring for the Sky Blues after just six minutes with Andy Webster poking home a second midway through the half to give Steven Pressley's men a well deserved lead.

Pressley made two changes for the trip to the South West, handing loan signing Nathan Delfouneso his full debut with a return to the side for Adam Barton at the expense of George Thomas and the ill John Fleck.

The Sky Blues wasted no time in shrugging of the sodden conditions though to get themselves ahead after just six minute with another superb individual effort from Franck Moussa.

The makeshift striker picked up the ball in the halfway line and ran at the Robins back line, starting with Adam El-Abd and then reeling in Aden Flint, twisting and turning the pair before firing under the body of 'keeper Simon Moore from eight yards to put the Sky Blues ahead.

Two minutes later Bristol City very nearly had a leveller when Marvin Elliott lashed a shot across the face of goal only for the ball to go wide of Joe Murphy's far post.

Elliott's effort from the only real flourish from the hosts in an open 20 minutes that were largely controlled by the Sky Blues' attacking endeavour.

Barton forced a good save out of Moore on 23 minutes when he picked up a ball 25 out and tried his luck with the Robins 'keeper having to tip the effort over the bar.

City only had to wait seconds though before they deservedly doubled their lead when, from Carl Baker's resulting corner delivery, a flick on from Delfouneso fell to the feet of Webster at the back post to poke home an easy finish from three yards.

Joe Murphy was called into action after 26 minutes when a through ball found Greg Cunningham to burst through the line only for Murphy to deny his relatively tame effort with a leg save.

The confidence within the Sky Blues was clear for all to see though, even in the driving rain and wind, when Baker fancied hhis chances from 30 yards and got his shot on target and forced an uncertain save from Moore with 11 minutes of the half to go.

The Robins nearly got a bizarre goal back with three minutes to go before the break though. A long ball aimed for Sam Baldock drew Murphy way off his line, the Bristol skipper then took it around Murphy and fired a finish from near the corner flag which he had to watch hit the inside of the far post with Blair Adams on hand to hack the ball clear.
