U18s: Coventry City 2-3 Leicester City - Dan Smith and Jacob Whitmore score in Foxes defeat

The Sky Blues lose despite first-half goals from Dan Smith and Jacob Whitmore...

Coventry City Under-18s suffered a narrow defeat to local rivals Leicester City in a pre-season friendly.

The Sky Blues were leading at the break thanks to goals from Dan Smith and Jacob Whitmore but Leicester scored two goals late on to record a 3-2 win.

City started the game on the front foot and almost went ahead in the 8th minute when Jordan Shipley capitalised on a defensive error but his powerful 20-yard strike was well saved.

The Sky Blues went ahead in the 20th minute when midfielder Callum Maycock found Dan Smith onside and he slotted home past the keeper.

Leicester only took eight minutes to equalise through Admiral Muskwe but five minutes before half-time, Jacob Whitmore's desire was rewarded when he tackled the keeper to slot home.

After the break, City should have gone further ahead in the 50th minute. Kyle Spence found the trialist in the area but the keeper came out quickly to deny him before Dion Kelly-Evans' cross almost found the trialist in the area but it was just ahead of him five minutes later.

With 20 minutes remaining, Leicester equalised with a brilliant finish from the substitute and in the 79th minute, the Foxes found the winner with another low shot.

Coventry City Under-18s: Addai (GK), Bromley, Barnett, Harries (Ford 60), Whitmore, Trialist, Spence, Maycock, Dev. Kelly-Evans (Di. Kelly-Evans 46), Shipley (Albini 46), Smith (Trialist 46).

Subs: Finn, Bayliss

Under-18s coach Jason Farndon said: "We went 3-5-2 for the first time today and it shows the players can adapt easily as it was a good performance from the lads.

"We've got a few players playing out of position and also we had a few trialists involved. It was good experience for the side against a good Leicester side who generally do well in the league.

"Good to see two Under-16s players stepping up and getting more game-time. A lot of players are beginning to make their case to start the season in a few weeks time."
