MATCH REPORT: Coventry City U21s 0-2 Crystal Palace U21 - Young Sky Blues suffer second-half defeat to Palace

1 October 2014

Goals from Andrew Johnson and Jacob Berkeley in the second-half at the Ricoh Arena sealed the win for Palace at the Ricoh Arena...

Coventry City Under-21s were downed at the Ricoh Arena thanks to two second-half goals from an experienced Crystal Palace side.

The Sky Blues dominated much of the first-half but were unable to find the net as Andrew Johnson and Jacob Berkeley sealed the points for the visitors.

The Sky Blues started well against the experienced Crystal Palace side which included former Birmingham City striker Johnson, former Aston Villa man Barry Bannan and former Newcastle United defender Peter Ramage.

City's first chance of the game came in the 6th minute when Mohamed Coulibaly found former Palace academy scholar Kyle Spence in the area but his low shot was blocked by Ramage.

A minute later, Palace had their first chance of the game when Johnson's low shot was blocked by Cian Harries and from the resulting corner, Sulley Kaikai went close at the back-post.

Mohamed Coulibaly began to find more space in the centre of the park and he was found by James Maddison in the 29th minute but his shot went narrowly wide before Thomas put a fierce effort wide two minutes later.

Lee Burge was forced into action seven minutes before the break when he saved Jake Gray's powerful shot but City finished the first-half on the front foot when Jack Finch fired it narrowly over in the 44th minute.

After the break, City pressed forward again and Coulibaly found Dion Kelly-Evans in the area but the right wing-back put his shot over the bar in the 61st minute.

The young City side continued to work hard as Devon Kelly-Evans came on for Coulibaly, despite playing against Halesowen Town the night before.

Palace took the lead against the run of play in the 67th minute when a long ball down the middle found Andrew Johnson in space and he poked the ball past Lee Burge.

James Maddison's 25-yard free-kick was tipped over the bar two minutes after as City looked to respond quickly but 14 minutes from time, Palace sealed the win.

Substitute Fisayo Adarabioyo was found onside and his initial shot was blocked before Jacob Berkeley slid the ball home as City's search for their first win of the season goes on.
